EWG Skin Deep Mobile App

Scientific studies over the past 40 years have fueled the consensus that exposure to toxic chemicals plays a role in the incidence and prevalence of many diseases and disorders in the US. Chemical ingredients common in many personal and beauty products are associated with a number of serious health problems. Phthalates, a chemical found in many cosmetics, are linked to cancer, hormone disruption, development and reproductive problems. Some companies use hazardous ingredients like formaldehyde and coal tar, both are human carcinogens. How can you know what harmful ingredients you are using on a daily basis?
EWG’s Skin Deep is a database that has transformed the marketplace, and now the mobile app gives consumers a safety tool at their fingertips. EWG’s online data base has safety ratings for over 78,000 personal care products and 2,500 brands. The data base was created because personal care products are not rigorously tested or regulated, and chemicals commonly found in those products are linked to a number of serious health issues. Since it came online, shoppers are consciously buying products that have fewer toxic ingredients. To appeal to those health-conscious consumers, many manufacturers have introduced product lines with fewer hazardous ingredients. A prime example of this is Beautycounter.
“Safety profiles for tens of thousands of products are now literally at the fingertips of everybody strolling the aisles of any store in the country,” said Heather White, executive director at Environmental Working Group. “This app will make choosing safer products for yourself and your family that much easier.”
