Zicam intranasal cold products have now been linked to numerous reports of long-lasting or permanent loss of smell (anosmia). These products include Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, and Zicam Cold Remedy, Kid Size. In some cases, loss of smell occurred after the first dose. In other cases it occurred after several doses. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received 130 reports of loss of smell related to these Zicam products. Potentially, hundreds of additional reports have not been submitted to the FDA. The zinc contained in Zicam intranasal products is thought to damage olfactory neurons in the nose. The manufacturer is withdrawing these products from the market. I advise patients who may have purchased one of these products not to use them.
